Guitars • Pedal Board Advice Wanted?

Ok, a classic opinion thread.

Back in the olden times I had pedals (boss/ibanez). Then, in the 90s, I switched to rack mount stuff. Then, in the oughts, I stopped playing live guitar at all, then, I started playing again, but I was either keeping it simple with just an amp, or, using my rack mount interface/mfx.

Recently I started buying a few pedals here and there and with a couple more on order, I'm back to needing a pedal board. I'm thinking that I need an isolated power supply and some kind of board, but, I've never used anything other than one row of pedals, I had a Boss BCB-6 back in the ancient times.

So I'm curious as to what people think works well? I'm talking in terms of physical layout, in terms of construction, in terms of how to think about it regarding it being either modular and temporary, or something that changes more slowly? Should I just get a couple of bits of wood and hit them with my router and call it a day?

Stories and longwinded arguments welcome, opinions welcome, recommended products welcome.
