Instruments • Massive CPU Consumption Using VPS Avenger v1.x on M1 Max MacBook Pro

Hi All,

A while back I purchased a used M1 Max MacBook Pro to tied me over until the upcoming M3 Mac Studio Ultra is released. While not the mind-blowing upgrade from my previous 2015 Core i7 quad-core MacBook Pro that I was expecting, the M1 Max MacBook Pro certainly performs better and runs much, much more quietly and cooly than my old Intel MacBook Pro.

Well, almost everything runs better on the M1 Max. Version 1.8.6 of VPS Avenger is unfortunately completely unusable. Currently, Cubase Pro 13's performance meter will show massive CPU spikes after simply instantiating the plugin. That's without playing any notes! If I play even a few single notes using a patch with a modest release time (for a total of 3 or 4 notes of polyphony max,) the audio will immediately begin to break up. Something is seriously wrong here. The performance was WAY better on my old 2015 Core i7 quad-core MacBook Pro. Incidentally, I don't have this issue with 100+ other plugins on my M1 Max MacBook Pro which has 64GB of RAM.

At first I thought Avenger v1.8.6 might not be M1-native. But then I remembered that Cubase 13 Pro doesn't even support non-Apple Silicon plugins. So Avenger v1.8.6 has to be a native plugin.

I'm considering upgrading to VPS Avenger 2.0 with the hopes of making the plugin actually usable. However, before throwing good money after bad and paying the absurdly overpriced $100 upgrade fee, I wanted to see if the new version of the plugin is better optimized for Apple Silicon processors.

Has anyone else experienced these issues when running Avenger v1.x on an M1 Mac? Does upgrading to v2.0 resolve these issues? Please let me know.

Thanks for your help!
