Some presets, it works. Most don't, however.
I'm not even a synth novice. I mostly use presets, to be honest, maybe with an adjustment here or there. Many of my tunes are in 3/4 timing, and getting rhythm sounds to sync up well is something I pretty ignorant about. I mostly use the u-he synths (podoski, zebra, tyrell), but also really starting to appreciate Surge XT.
