I've been looking for this, for a long time. I've read about others wanting the same thing. It just seems that most accept something less capable, than what they were looking for.
It is really just a need for a complex sampler, or automated audio file/buffer player. But it often gets confused as a scrubber, scratcher, or glitch.
There are some DAW provided solutions, in ProTools, Live, Reaper, and Bitwig. But, it would be nice to have a more complete solution, that you can take anywhere.
DJ turntable software, samplers, loopers, slicers, glitch effects, etc. don't seem to cover the desired outcome. Most either deal with small clips (even if sequencing several of them), or don't provide sensitive enough (if at all) automation.
The idea is to have full automated control over an audio file/sample playback. Essentially "transport control" independent of the DAW.
These need to be automation options, exposed to the Host.
- Play / Stop
- Playback Direction (somewhat related to playback rate)
- Loop Enable / Disable
- Loop Point Start / End
- Loop Point Type (PingPong, Forward, Backward)
- Playback Position
- Playback Rate (somewhat related to playback direction)
On top of that, the typical pitch engines (retain playrate outside of pitch change/retain pitch outside of playrate change) would be nice. But honestly, I could make do without them.
I don't need to slice and dice the sample. It might be a pain in the rear, but I want manual control over the whole operation; even though there are some really fantastic plugins doing wonderful things with the essence of the idea.
With this control, if you where a real nerd, you could compose a whole piece by several automated playbacks of just one sample. It would probably sound like it came out of an old audio tracker. But the uninitiated would be shocked to find there was just one sample involved, in the whole thing (with no visual indication of notes or beats being seen in the DAW).
It wouldn't even need to be a plugin, if it had midi controls available for all the required variables. Some turntable apps are like that; they are just more geared towards a different style of effect.
This could be used for scratching, scrubbing, sampling, looping, stutter, and glitch. But the typical tools that do all of those things, are limited to their specific outcomes.
I admit that I may have overlooked some tool that does all of this. Perhaps it is just too basic of an ask, and no one sees a reason for it.
There is a sampler in LMMS that does much of this. You can't control the playback position, and reverse reverses the whole sample (not reversing at the current playback position). But you can control loop points (or the sample start/end in loop mode). If you want to control play rate, you have to do it via a pitch automation. It isn't really designed to do what I am looking for; but "sadly" it seems to have come the closest.
I really wouldn't want to invest in a tool that does some of this, but then you need to jump through hoops to get the rest of it; like Reaktor. It seems a simple enough of a task, that it makes sense to have one tool that can do this one thing (of many parts). You don't really need to be jumping all over your plugin or DAW, to manage the total aspect of it.
If you can think of anything like that, please share; even if it is an older plugin or application. Or, maybe I should just break down and make the plugin myself. I do wonder if that isn't my best bet.
Thanks for reading.
