It provides smooooooth yet adequately reactive compression that can emphasizes low end transients with the sidechain phase rotation. The dynamic saturation is the cherry on top, helping tame transients that passed through the compressor's gentle attack phase.
Tips & Notes:
- I keep gain reduction between 1-3db usually. The dynamic saturation should do a bit more after the fact, so adjusting the drive amount is important.
- Attack timing for this preset achieves desired result between ~20-40ms. Relaxing the attack phase lets the saturation handle more transients even though it's tied to the overall compression amount.
- For the first stage release, ~40-60ms is the minimum I go as to avoid hearing pumping or unintended distortion.
- Sometimes the sidechain rotator (φ) can alter the shape of low end transients too much, you can disable it in this case.
- "Inverse ratio", "Feedback" & "Relaxed" all help create a smooth compression effect. "Relaxed" slightly increases the amount of compression, but in a relaxed way.
- I find keeping the dual stage attack & release the same value useful. The dual stage dynamics seem to behave more consistently this way & can help avoid endless fiddling with combinations of the two values. 2s is a sweet spot for me.
- "Attack mix" reduces the effectiveness of the first stage attack, which is already intentionally slow, so it's not that useful in this specific preset.
- Experiment & Enjoy!
